Firefox 3: A reason why it is fast

Firefox 3

I have talked a few times about how much I am liking Firefox 3b2 on the Mac. I had given up on Firefox 2, as it was too slow and ate too much memory. Firefox 3 is a different beast. It also barely ever reminds me that it is in beta. It has been very stable indeed; the only issue coming when I am on flaky wireless.

Of course, only a few plugins are working on Firefox 3 (or maybe most work but they don’t update their file / I don’t force update it). This means that I am not loading a bunch of plugin code that slows down Firefox. Thus, I do wonder how it will fare when Firefox 3 is out in full force and so are the plugins.

If FF3 can continue to match Webkit (well, almost) AND give me the plugins I love? Good luck to ‘em.

It looks like a B3 release candidate landed yesterday:

    https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2008/02/2008-02-05-11-firefox3.0b3/

It has the Firefox branding (instead of Minefield) so I’m assuming it’s probably going to get pushed out today or tomorrow if they don’t run into anything severe. I’ve been running it for a few hours now without issue.

Also, you know you can enable the incompatible extensions with the nightly tester tool, right?

I’ve been using Web Developer, Adblock, Greasemonkey, Firebug, and a few other smallish extensions and they seem to be working just fine. I have a feeling there isn’t going to be as big of an impact on extensions with this release. The APIs must not have been a huge focus of the 3.0 release or something.

I still find it slower than Webkit, I’m not sold yet.

haha… that’s funny. i do think the plugins will slow it down… but not by much… The only must have is Firebug. …miss my delicious plugin/toolbar button most.

I got the plugins i needed most running by using the Nightly Tester Tools extension. And yes it’s faster and more stable

Mac? For those of you who think that Apple made webkit you are dead wrong. It is created and maintaned by the Konqueror browser team, the KDE Linux browser but now also available for other Unixes, Windows and Mac. Apple is shamelessly copying open source projects. Don’t think that Apple made this people.
