Atomic operations in Flickr

Tech Add comments

I should be using the Flickr plugin for iPhoto, but right now I am just using the standalone uploader tool.

The problem with this tool seems to be that it hangs from time to time, and the operations are not atomic.

So, if I upload 100 photos and it hangs on 54, 53 end up uploaded but not into a set, so they are in a weird state.

On the Mac the uploader tool also requires hard resets when this happens which is painful.

Flickr’s utilities are awful. They haven’t even been updated in years despite being so obviously broken.

Faced with uploading about 2000 photos from my previous gallery I finally resorted to writing my own software to upload via their API. It took minimal effort to enable retries, and resumptions.

I’m pretty committed to their service at this point, but I have to admit many aspects of their service are disappointing.

    Use JUploadr instead.
