Romain and team did a good job with their Extreme GUI makeover talk.
Ben and I were wondering if it would be fun to have a competition next year. A Swing team, and an Ajax team get the same spec, and have to come up with a great application.
Now, at first we thought that we would have no chance. We have an XHR, and the Swing team has JOGL and Java2D!
How can we even the playing field? How about this. We keep track of the hours that we spend on the project, and at the JavaOne talk, we give the other team an envelope with the number of hours spent on the project.
What do you think guys?

Dion,
Why not try and make a Dashboard style application for the competition?
This would essentially consist of charts and tables.
Rich and fluid interactions via drill down, panning and zooming on charts, drag and drop and such clever stuff could make this really interesting.
Furthermore, why not throw in Flex into the mix.
Make 3 teams, an AJAX one, a JavaFX one and a Flex team and ask them to make a Dashboard, depicting let’s say the last US Congress election results. That kind of data is readily available, I think.

Instead of just 3 groups having all the fun, why not, as a side show, open it up to the floor as well.

While the idea sounds fun, aren’t web applications and desktop application fundamentally different (by nature) and hence need to be addressed differently?
So I guess the outcome will be pretty much depending on the nature of the assignment, don’t you think?
