Apple pioneered the mouse (via Xerox ;) ). They love it. I didn’t quite understand how much until I was listening to an audio book on my last 5 hour drive from Madison to Minneapolis. I was listening to The Second Coming of Steve Jobs, which is a very frank account of Steve, and details his travels from NeXT back until he is in charge of Apple once more. It shows that he got VERY lucky with Pixar ;)
But, anyway, back to the mouse. When Steve was speaking to a group at Stanford (when he was at NeXT), he took one of the current Mac keyboards from a student who wanted him to sign it. He then went on to pick out all of the keys that he hated. He hated the function keys. He hated the arrow keys, as he felt that we should all be using the mouse.
I understand what a great innovation the mouse was. I would hate to use Photoshop with arrow keys :) However, I actually try to use the mouse as little as possible. This may be because I am from the vi/emacs frame of mind, and I have some weird twisted thought that it will stop me getting carpel tunnel :)
Although, I can setup nice key bindings on my PowerBook, there are STILL areas which drive me nuts.
Tab To Damn Drop Downs!
One of the primary irritants, is how I can’t tab from text boxes to drop downs and select them with the keyboard. This is even the case within apps such as Firefox. I am sorry, but when I fill out a form I want to be able to just use my keyboard and tab between all fields. It drives me nuts that I have to stop and get the mouse out to make the drop down selections.
God knows how people with accessibility problems think!

Your tags got a little screwed up on the title of your audio book. It opens with an italics, but has a closing anchor tag.

Also, now that I think about it, I always tab from text boxes to dropdowns and it seems to work fine. I just went to google’s advanced search to check. When I hit tab once from the text box that the cursor is defaulted to, it takes me to the number of results dropdown. I can arrow key it down or begin typing and it will select the dropdown choice that matches best. I use this all the time because I like using the keyboard to tab between all fields.

I think Dion is talking about tabbing to Drop Downs on OS X. It doesn’t work in any browser that I have tried.
Another really annoying thing is that you can tab to or select checkboxes/radio buttons either (the space works for this on Windows).
If someone knows how to make that work, I would love to know.

Dion, have you checked the box “full keyboard access” in the “keyboard shorcuts” tabs of the “keyboard and mouse” system preferences? (names may be not correct, my powerbook is configured in French…)
With that checkbox, you should have a complete access to tab between fields.
However, I tried with Google Advanced Search: it works fine with Safari but drop down menus are not focused with Firefox… but that’s no longer Mac OX’s fault! :-)

One small difference: on Windows (and Linux, IIRC) you can tab to a dropdown and start typing. As you type you’ll jump to the next match of that letter. It’s not smart enough to do full completion, but good enough so that when I’m filling in my state (Pennsylvania) I can usually get away with a single ‘p’ (sometimes it’s two — when they have have ‘Palau’ in the state listing).
On OSX you have to tab to the dropdown, hit the down-arrow and THEN start typing. You also have to hit ENTER to register your selection whereas on PCs you can just TAB to the next one.
