So, Google is on the path to IPO.

I really wish the best for them because:

a) I like Google
b) A lot of people are watching. If the do well it bodes well for the tech sector, and if they don’t…..

It will be very interesting to see how Google changes. Being public is a royal pain in the butt. Now you answer to your share-holders and the street. Now people will be poking and proding.

I am sure they can handle it (hey there are lots of successful public companies!).

It is really interesting to learn from Google.

The Google Zeitgeist page gives us search patterns, trends, and surprises, based on analysis at Google. This is great stuff, and I wonder how much Google does (or could) charge to do analysis for particular companies.

When you survey people, X% will always lie. Here Google has access to raw results. Gold. If I was Google I would be trying to get more and more knowledge on “who” is doing the searching… which would make the data even greater.

After reading that Google is creating an email service, Gmail I started to think about what I wanted in my email client.

• MetaEverything: I want to be able to right-click on a mail message and tag it with meta data. This meta data will allow me to search/filter my mail.
• Multiple Folders: A message should be able to live in multiple folders. Folder heirachies are great until you realise that an entity wants to live in multiple paths
• Filter up: I want virtual folders which show all messages from sub-folders. E.g. if I click on Email Lists/Java it shows me messages from all of the lists (Email Lists/Java/JDO and Email Lists/Java/Groovy and …)
• Security: This isn’t just a client thing… but I wish everyone had digital keys and we were seemlessly using them in our email.

It had to happen didn’t it. All applications grow until they can read email. It appears that Google is no different. They have launched GMail which is “an experiment in a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that you should never have to delete mail and you should always be able to find the message you want.”

I just read a piece on the “Google way”. There were two interesting items that come out of this discussion:

1) Google Philosophy:

- Work on things that matter, affect everyone in the world
- Solve problems with algorithms if possible
- Hire bright people and give them lots of freedom
- Don

I have used EZ Goal Wi-Fi Hotspots in the past to find a wi-fi location nearby.

Now Google is in the act, and you can query via the new “Search by Location” service that is in beta in the Google labs.
