Beware the ides of System.setProperties(..)

Tech 23 Comments »

System.setProperties(..) brings down WebLogic. We ran into this bad boy again when we integrated a new library API. As soon as WebLogic ran the library everything would die. Running the test cases, and everything was fine. It was very strange!

The culprite turned out to be that the API was calling System.setProperties(..). This wipes out all of the system properties that you had. WebLogic uses a lot of these (JNDI info etc) so it got very confused after this had happened.

Beware the ides of System.setProperties(..)

Richard Branson Reality

British, Personal, TV / Movie 1 Comment »

As soon as I saw The Apprentice with Donald Trump, I thought it would be a no-brainer to copy the show in the UK, using Richard Branson (Mr. Virgin).

It turns out that he has gone 1 step further and will be involved in another US reality show Branson’s Big Adventure.

On a side note, I used to know someone who worked at Virgin and he had the business title: “Chief Virgin Converter” :)

Google Mail: All applications tend to email

Google, Tech 1 Comment »

It had to happen didn’t it. All applications grow until they can read email. It appears that Google is no different. They have launched GMail which is “an experiment in a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that you should never have to delete mail and you should always be able to find the message you want.”
