The importance of the music video

Personal Add comments

As soon as MTV came online we knew that musicians had to think about another part of their art: the music video.

This was great news for good looking performers, and video directors with crazy ideas.

As with any medium, the majority of videos were quite boring. It took time to learn that a video didn’t have to just be a recording of the band singing the song!

Peter Gabriel did great things such as Sledgehammer.

In 2006 music videos are just another thing you produce with your songs. How important are they though?

With the advent of myspace, youtube, google video, and others, I think that they can make your band.

A great example is OK GO and their highly creative treadmill video:

I would be willing to bet that they have a LOT more fans due to this video, and the pure coverage that it has gotten both online and in traditional media.

If I was to create a new band, with the huge competition out there, I would be looking for a killer creative music video and seed it all over the shop. If I was good looking and had no talent though, I would signup with American Idol :/

    Hey there

I appreciate your blog and wondered if I could ask you to elaborate just a touch. I have been helping a band gain some media attention and expand their gig venues etc etc and the band recently submitted some demo to the our local radio stations. 2 of which are now airing songs and we are still awaiting the other stations reviews.

With this submission we never included a video, budget restraints ofcause being a new band and all.
Its been ticking over my mind that maybe an accomping video would actually have improved the support of the music… or do radio stations really just listen to the tracks.

I think I have come up with a way to get sponsorship for a music video through a level of product placement in the video but in order to motivate the sponsor to support the project I want to try give them a very clear imagine of just how far the video could go … although I see music videos on tv often I dont actually know the first thing about marketing the video, is it the song that drives the video or the video that drives the song?? What sort of things can almost ensure that a video will get spots on tv? Do you know? I dont know rules of video airing. Do TV stations pay royalities for these and how do we get them out???

Any advise on how I can find this informations so that I have something concrete to work with would be so appreicated.

    warm regards Kel
