The only people who can get away with using Twitter as a stage are people who have already created a name for themselves in other ways. But you can't start off that way, by any means. In fact, most people that you would expect to have the stage are exactly as you said at the end, all on an equal playing field. It's scary for new twitter users, cause they didn't expect to be able to communicate with such great people before. At the same time, though, many of the 'big names' don't expect to have to actually communicate, which leads to a pretty bad experience all around. If you aren’t building community, you aren’t really building much of anything.
