Now you know how they revolutionized and streamlined the process. I'm sure that not making exceptions like this one is part of it.

I also have a three year, next business day onsite warranty but with the rate at which models become obsolete I wonder useful it is for older machines.

Currently, my two year old latitude C840 needs a new motherboard. I hadn't heard anything for a few days and after the third time I called the Dell person finally figured out that it was on back order. It might take a week, it could take a month...hopefully someone still manufactures them...:-(

Ironically I got the following email from Amazon just after this post:

We wanted to let you know that there is a delay with item(s) in the order you placed on January 23 2005 13:04 PST

blah blah blah

Are they all moving to RFID or something? ;)

If you order a laptop get the 3 year warranty. I got my sister a Dell laptop for Law School. She has had the motherboard replaced 3 times (usually with decent turnaround, about 1 week) and recently the screen died and they sent her a brand new laptop. However, they expected her to backup all her stuff and install it fresh on the new machine... not a pretty sight for someone who doesn't have any experience with that kind of thing. How do you explain to people that they can't just copy MS Office onto the new machine? Even worse, Dell expected her to backup to some intermediate machine before she got the new one so she could trade machines with the UPS guy when he dropped the new one off.
