Yep, and every employer pays competitive wages. Which, of course, depends on how competitive is defined.

When I was at Chevron, we were told that the company paid salaries that were #1, 2, or 3 in the oil business — that’s competitive (in my opinion). At GE, it was “comparable to major universities, national labs, and Fortune 100 companies.” Competitive, but not as competitive…

And another former employer defined it as “just high enough to keep you from going to another company that won’t pay relocation costs….” Hard to believe when one departing colleague doubled his salary, and another tripled his (combined with a major job change, to be fair). Even so, they continued to claim that they paid competitive salaries.

“Smart and talented people” have been poached by Google :p.

The definition of 1%-er is relative anyway, some employers hate smart and talented people
with lousy attitude, some prefer hiring people that execute well without having to be
very smart and very talented.

Just like what Joel claims, “The company I started, Fog Creek Software, makes a terrific product called FogBUGZ”.
Everyone I know actually laughs at that. There’s no way FogBUGZ can be defined as terrific.
For bug tracking purpose, JIRA is by far better (super duper terrific), hands down.
