Screencast Quality

I am playing with screencasts and coming up with a simple way to do them and get them out there.

The current model is:

  • Capture with iShowU or Snapz Pro X on the Mac…. Camtasia Studio on the PC
  • Do simple edits in Quicktime Pro
  • Do more complicated edits in Final Cut
  • Upload to YouTube to share

The current issue is that the quality once uploaded isn’t too great (e.g. Live DOM Viewer).

I have also tried Google Video, and I am playing with many codecs. Maybe I will find the magic settings.

If anyone has experience making really nice screencasts let me know. Maybe I give up on the ease of uploading to YouTube and use a hosted Flash delivery system.

    Have you considered Quicktime? Nothing beats H.264 for screencasting, in my experience.
    I have never been able to get good quality with Flash. For “live action” video the quality is acceptable I guess, but for screencasts it just doesn’t cut it.

    If you only need 256 colors, Windows Media Screen Codec is good (100KB/minute for pixel perfect 800×600@10fps): see here for instructions and an example:

    I have a similar workflow (SnapZ Pro X and edit in iMovie), but I am not satisfied at all by how YouTube, Google Video and such compress the thing. And I need 700×450 pixels (half the screen size of the MacBook Pro). So I ended up in renting some space from a provider and publishing the whole .mpg.
