I’ve been having similar problems, aggravated because I’ve been making a lot of use of the Scrapbook plugin and on the other side Omea Reader (rss & newgroups) so I’ve pretty large pools of stuff to sync up between work & the office.

I have been using an ant script to zip up changes to various directories over a fixed period and manually (painfully) syncing up my home machine. I’ve got foxylicious installed, but its a very public affair and many of my bookmarks are either live bookmarks, bookmarklets or internal servers & wikis. Plus the way foxylicious will unravel your folder structure isnt too helpful. There also was a bookmark synchroniser plugin, but the developers gone walkabout and left it non-functional.

I too have wondered about setting up webdav or even rsync on my box at home, but syncing up essentially working directories isnt entirely straightforward (esp webdav on Windows) and theres the constant security concerns about opening up the home network and what happens when the adsl next goes down.

What about keeping your firefox profile in subversion anybody tried that? I’d guess remembering to manually commit and update all the time would be such a pain.

The other route is to use firefox portable and a sizeable usb flash drive, but its not the fastest solution and you cant quickly jump between machines without unloading the key and plugging in elsewhere.

This was something that frustrated me a couple of years ago (though I’ve never used FireFox for RSS) leading to various conversations with folk about setting up a state synchronisation (web) service. I was just about to knuckle down and start coding when somebody mentioned to me that RSS Bandit could do what I wanted – so I ended up taking the lazy route and switching aggregators.

RSS Bandit syncs to WebDAV, FTP, file shares, Das Blog and NewsGator (though not awfully well in the later case). With a small handful of services out there offering free WebDAV accounts that seems to be the preference – and ultimately it’s offering much the same as a non WS-* web service. Surely somebody could write a FireFox plugin to do the same?

the SessionSaver plugin does this with the tabs/pages you happen to be browsing. Prob could be extended to bookmarks/profiles.

Is this some kind of LazyWeb request? :-)

I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. Wouldn’t it be nice to just put your password once and have your whole profile come in?

Then it would post each change to the server, and when you come to another machine, it would download the changes plus needed dependencies (e.g. XPI files).

not exactly rocket science, but this could turn into a nice project.
