Everyone thinks they’re hiring the top 1%.
You have to love Joel Spolsky.
He is spot on with this one. His points on statistic make sense, but I think the biggest gem is:
The top 0.5% usually have jobs. They have jobs where they do very well, so their employers pay them lots of money and do whatever it takes to keep them happy.
and that conclusion leads him too:
By the way, it’s because of this phenomenon — the fact that many of the great people are never on the job market — that we are so aggressive about hiring summer interns. This may be the last time these kids ever show up on the open market. In fact we hunt down the smart CS students and individually beg them to apply for an internship with us, because if you wait around to see who sends you a resume, you’re already missing out.
We all want to work with smart, talented people. Even if you have to hunt through a lot of resumes you can find a lot of talented people out there. They may not be statistically be the top 1%, but if they are hard working, smart, and up for it… they will do well for you!

“Smart and talented people” have been poached by Google :p.
The definition of 1%-er is relative anyway, some employers hate smart and talented people
with lousy attitude, some prefer hiring people that execute well without having to be
very smart and very talented.
Just like what Joel claims, “The company I started, Fog Creek Software, makes a terrific product called FogBUGZ”.
Everyone I know actually laughs at that. There’s no way FogBUGZ can be defined as terrific.
For bug tracking purpose, JIRA is by far better (super duper terrific), hands down.

Yep, and every employer pays competitive wages. Which, of course, depends on how competitive is defined.
When I was at Chevron, we were told that the company paid salaries that were #1, 2, or 3 in the oil business — that’s competitive (in my opinion). At GE, it was “comparable to major universities, national labs, and Fortune 100 companies.” Competitive, but not as competitive…
And another former employer defined it as “just high enough to keep you from going to another company that won’t pay relocation costs….” Hard to believe when one departing colleague doubled his salary, and another tripled his (combined with a major job change, to be fair). Even so, they continued to claim that they paid competitive salaries.
